Developers invited to preview PCN Library
Silicon Valley, CA– October 1, 2009 – PointCast Network™ (PCN) has today pre-released its PCN Library (PCNL) for exploration by the developer community - http://pointcast.webs.com/licensedownloadthelib.htm.
PointCast's mission is to make it easy to develop the classic PCN, but w/ modern tools. To accomplish this we will attempt to slowly build a developer community. PCNL is accessible as a source code via SVN as pre-release, the full stable release is coming Jan 1. 2010. You should use PCNL if the current javascript/ajax/web 2.0 doesn't offer a rich enough experience or doesn't provide the features you require or you miss the classic PointCast and want to bring it back.
PCNL builds upon reflections/shadows, tweening and actionscript/flash elements all contributing to the overall look and imagery possible on today's dynamic websites.
- No client browser install
- Eliminates cross browsing issues
- Assists in encapsulating components (you can use other 3rd party libs)
- Assets and socket server, client and server tools work w/o security issues on port 80
- App store api via PayPal
Pricing & Availability
The PointCast Networks Library toolkit is $1 for the attribution license payable through Paypal prior to accessing the PCNL SVN. http://pointcast.webs.com/licensedownloadthelib.htm. The site also provides a free IDE and free VMWare Tomcat image, independent of the PCNL – it could be used to quickly set up the PCNL socket server and client IDE, but PCNL is light weight and can be used w/ any Java Server and any actionscript IDE.
For more information and to register for upcoming PCN events, including presentations and online PNCL training, please register on the site to be notified – two events are coming up shortly but only to those registered.
About PointCast Network
PointCast Network™ is the re-incarnation of 90' "push" technology – here now as socket server, plus a rich UI, now as flash/actionscript lib. As an established brand best known for its consumer software, PointCast offered its users a live feed that would automatically deliver news and headlines over the Web to the user's PC. This before-its-time technology relied on the dial-up connection speeds of the mid 90’s and the support of content providers who were only beginning to realize the value of their content, on-line distribution mechanisms and monetization opportunities. Today PCN has morphed into a developer library to provide more up-to-date features and techology to the developer community.

Download all 3 files and unzip: http://sf.net/projects/pcn2/files/files (7 zip) - works under Windows, OSX and Linux.
You'll need the latest free player from VMWare. This runs an configured Tomcat server on port 80 w/ Eclipse, Jabber MIT - Prosody, Harmony JVM, FTP server to upload, etc, great for development - and used by PCN.
All software is business friendly and permissive license.
